Weingut Carl Ehrhard Wines

Weingut Carl Ehrhard Wines

From the producer:

Our winery is located in one of the most famous wine-growing regions of Germany - the Rheingau!

Carl Ehrhard pursues a consistent vinification in his family business in 5th generation. The 7 hectares of Riesling & Spätburgunder grapes are hand picked and selected several times. In the 130 year old vaulted cellar, each vineyard receives individually in its own barrel the TIME for its decelerated development. This natural ripening process is aimed at wines of the highest quality with the longevity and elegance that once gave Riesling its international reputation. With us, each vintage can and should stand out for itself and surprise again and again!

2017 Rudesheim Riesling Trocken

100% Riesling

This is a blend produced from the first harvest of younger vines from all of Carl’s vineyards. The fruit is harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place spontaneously and naturally from ambient yeasts. 60% of the juice is fermented in Fuders-traditional 1,200 liter neutral oak barrels. The slow, gentle transformation into wine lasts around two months. Over this period the wine rests on its lees. No wood flavors are imparted, but this traditional use of barrels helps to smooth it out. The remaining 40% is fermented and aged in stainless steel. The wine is bottled completely dry, without residual sugar. The term “Trocken” means “dry”. Carl chooses not to designate and label this wine by the prädikatsystem (Kabinett, Spätlese, etc.). Technically the quality of this wine is above Kabinett, but he makes wine like they did in the old days, and labels them this way too. “Back to the roots”, as he says.

Pairs well with seafood, Mediterranean dishes, and chicken.

2018 Berg Roseneck Riesling Kabinett

100% Riesling

The Roseneck vineyard is named for the Rosenhecken, or rose hedges that grow on its rocky edges. The vineyard has two very distinct sections. This wine is produced from the western side where the slopes are very steep and composed of quartzite and red slate. As evidenced here, this part of the vineyard produces more delicate, mineral driven wines. Select grapes are hand-picked. Fermentation occurs spontaneously and naturally from ambient yeasts. This slow, gentle transformation lasts around seven weeks until the cold winter temperatures stop it naturally, leaving around 50 grams per liter of natural sugar. The wine is then filtered gently and bottled.
