GRAPE VARIETY | VINEYARDS

The history of Friulian Tocai is pretty complex and in many points intertwines with that of Hungarian Tokaji, helping to create some confusion, although neither the two vines nor the two wines have any aspect in common.

 

More precisely, Friulano is a variety of transalpine origin, in particular from France, which arrived by chance in Friuli together with other international grapes such as the classic Sauvignon. Some analysis on the DNA of the vine revealed, in fact, that our Friulian Tocai is related to Sauvignonasse, a grape quality present in the past in Bordeaux’s area and today almost disappeared. However, despite its French origins, the vine has subsequently evolved, adapting to the soil and climate. Finally, it was the Friulian people who gave it its current identity, making it a symbol of the territory and local culture.

In 2008 the European Community, after coming to an agreement between Italy and Hungary, banned the use of the word “Tocai” for the Friulian wine, as it was considered too similar to the Hungarian “Tokaji."


The last harvest of Tocai in Friuli was therefore that of 2007: since then the wine obtained from these grapes is called “Friulano," to underline its strong connection with the territory. And this term, to tell the truth, was paired with our “Tocai” since the 1930s, when Professor Dalmasso suggested to add it to distinguish it from the others.

 

Our Friulano vineyards are located within the DOC Collio area.

GRAPE VARIETY

Our Friulano grapes come from vineyards located within the DOC Collio. It’s a white-grape variety with origins from France, that adapted itself to the characteristics of the region and it’s today considered a local vine.

HARVEST

The grapes were hand picked and de-stemmed between September 11th and September 17th 2019.

VINIFICATION | AGING

The must was then left on the skins for about 12/14 hours at a temperature of 10°-12° C in tanks especially designed to protect it from oxygen by using recycled carbon dioxide from the first fermentation, in order to avoid using high levels of antioxidants. Subsequently, the must fermented and aged on the lees for 6 months in stainless steel vats.

COLOR

Straw yellow or light golden, quite bright, with greenish shades.

NOSE

On the nose we perceive the prevalence of fruity notes of pear and apple, in harmony with the vegetable ones of hay, wildflowers and chamomile and to finish the typical hint of toasted almond, unique in this grape variety.

PALATE

In the mouth it is a little bit acidic, round, full-bodied, and what promised on the nose is confirmed by the taste, which identifies its main feature in the final touch of bitter almond.

TO BE PAIRED WITH

Since always is considered the ideal aperitif in Friuli, especially with raw ham, but it’s a wine for any time of the day, from appetizers and canapés before lunch, to dinner. Excellent also with asparagus soup and white meats.
