Ruth Lewandowski Wines
notes from the producer:
When grapes are grown not for tonnage but with a healthy, truly whole, finished wine in mind...when one farms in tune with our natural cycles, never fighting against them...when one thinks of soil health as much as fruit quality. Then and only then are we on the path to truly living one of the most cliché phrases in wine today: "wine is made in the vineyard."
And if we've done our jobs farming the wine, we have nothing to be afraid of in the cellar. With balanced fruit and clean practices, we're afforded confidence in the balance of microbial life and that the right organisms will do the right thing and carry out this near alchemical transformation from base grape to purified liquid.
Matthew Rorick farms one of the most compelling sites in all of California, Rorick Heritage Vineyard in Calaveras. High altitude, super unique soils and steep slopes produce extremely particular fruit. Tinta Roriz (aka, Tempranillo) from RHV is picked and direct pressed to form the delicate, spicy, snappy strawberry component for this wine. Fox Hill Vineyard is planted ALMOST entirely to Italian varieties. The Portuguese block is the exception. Souzão and Touriga Nacional are both primarily relegated to the production of fortified wine, both here and back home in Portugal. But with these two meaty, herbal, tannic, intensely colored varieties I have found such intriguing success in bringing to life a more savory, earthy and structured version of pink wine. It's not just for porch pounding or deck drinking (although, feel free to continue to do so).
Working at once with all of the Piedmontese varieties found at Fox Hill, Feints is quite an unexpected wine. It's a co-fermentation of Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Arneis and a hair of Montepulciano...yes, four reds and a white (and nearly 30% white this year)! Full carbonic maceration keeps things poppy, light on its feet and fresh. For all intents and purposes this is the complex light red wine go-to and truly couldn't be more gluggable.
