Franchere For Heaven's Sake, Don't Move Here

About the producer:

My gentle winemaking regime ensures the wines express their central Willamette Valley origins. Fermentations are conducted exclusively with native yeasts and I never add enzymes, tannins, colorants, water, adjuncts, or gums. The wines are aged in used barrels and neutral tanks, and the end results are fresh, savory, and balanced.

When I am able to lease vines and vineyards, I farm along organic lines. Other fruit is purchased from trusted growers who farm sustainably, without irrigation or systemic herbicides.

2020 "For Heaven's Sake, Don't Move Here"

This is my orange wine, and it’s an ironically-named tribute to explorers and immigrants. Vitis vinifera is, of course, not native to this hemisphere, and in the long view of things, so few of us are. But as we put down roots we adapt to our new home, and ideally harmonize with it, rather than bend it to our will.

I cofermented 57% Pinot gris and 43% Grüner veltliner for 9 days in an open-topped fermentor, pressed at 7 brix in a basket press, then aged the wine for 7 months in neutral French oak and stainless steel tank. The wine is totally dry and it completed malolactic conversion.

“For Heaven’s Sake” is unfined, unfiltered, and looks like something between peach skin and pre-mixed tequila sunrise. For me, fresh saline aromas and rocks are the first things to hit my nose, but there’s also plenty of sliced melon and sweet florals (daffodil?). The flavors also unfold nicely: it’s tangy on the attack, then fleshier at midpalate, with Queen Anne cherry and tangerine mingling with paprika, citrus zest, and a mouthwatering salinity on the finish. The distinctive tannins are fine and already quite resolved.

As with most orange wines, do not drink too cold. Just pop it in the fridge for maybe 30 minutes so that’s it’s around 55° F.
