notes from the producer:
We believe the character of Oregon wine is defined by the incredible diversity found in the various growing regions spread across the state. From Applegate Valley in the south to Yamhill-Carlton in the north and numerous AVAs in between, we seek and work with growers who are committed to stewardship of the soil and the vine through biodynamic and organic practices. These people are the backbone of our business, and we are proud to call them partners and friends.
Vin de Days RougeWillamette Valley
Our flagship red made to please a crowd, the 2020 Vin de Days Rouge is the product of a classic Willamette Valley vintage. The fermentation method yields a vibrant, bright red fruit profile with high-toned aromas of tart cherry, ripe raspberry and strawberry, along with a perfumed floral component reminiscent of violets. There is a beguiling secondary complexity in the form of white pepper and crushed gravel, a reflection of the significant proportion of Pinot Meunier in the blend. Persistent acidity and racy red fruits define the flavor profile, but again the Meunier keeps everything balanced with a slight obsidian-volcanic streak on the mid-palate. A crisp and refreshing finish brings you back to the glass again and again. Dangerously drinkable is the most appropriate description of this wine.
Pinot Noir Johan VineyardWillamette Valley
Johan Vineyard is an 85-acre, Demeter-certified biodynamic site in the Willamette Valley, south of McMinnville and west of Salem. This site is almost always our last Pinot pick of harvest. Although it's a relatively low-elevation site, due to its proximity to the coast and the winds that howl through the Van Duzer Corridor every summer afternoon, the fruit here tends to ripen later than in our other vineyards. It is primarily marine sediment soils, and the benefit of biodynamic farming is completely apparent when one stands in this healthy and alive place. Our Johan Pinot Noir always displays a lovely, deep red berry core allied to a beguiling spice component that makes for a classic southern Willamette profile. The tannins and acids in this wine are typically strident in their youth, indicating a long and fulfilling life in the cellar.
100% Pinot Noir. Spontaneously fermented by natural yeasts with 30% whole clusters, it was aged in French oak (15% new and 85% neutral) for 22 months. We racked it twice and then bottled it unfiltered and unfined in July, 2019
Tannat 'TNT' Layne VineyardApplegate Valley
Layne Vineyard is one of the original vineyards in the Applegate Valley. These vines were planted in 1975 by Roger Layne and grafted over to Tannat in 2009. This is truly wild vineyard country. Perched high up on the Kubli Bench at approximately 1,600 feet and tucked away in among eucalyptus and madrone groves, it's so far out of the way that it gets frequent visits from apex predators that live in the area, including both mountain lion and black bear. Getting the fruit fully ripe here requires patience and careful crop management, and in 2016 both of these came together splendidly.
In its ancestral form, Tannat from the Old World and from Uruguay (its adoptive New World home) can be an unforgiving grape that makes equally unforgiving wines known for their stern tannins and bracing structure. Our TNT, however, is a different story altogether. Brianne has always loved the Tannat fruit from Applegate for the sublimely luxurious and elegant wines she's able to make from it. The 2016 TNT shows off immediate aromas of opulent blueberry, boysenberry, and loganberry accented by a candied violet high note. A subtle spice framework supports the already expressive fruit, but this wine has miles to go before it reaches the full range of its character. The palate presence is eye-opening with the varietal's natural tannins fully apparent but also very fine and precise underneath a youthfully ripe blackberry fruit profile with nuances of black licorice and anise. It may not display the up-front charm of the 2015 vintage, but it doesn't have to. The 2016 vintage is a thoroughbred, built to go the distance with explosive power and strident elegance. It's hands-down our best TNT yet.
