The 2014 Clos Marsalette offers up an intriguing combination of super-ripe red stone fruit and expressive floral notes. Today, the 2014 is especially racy and a bit more overtly ripe than it was from barrel. Sweet herbs, tobacco, rose petal, mint and anise add lift to the creamy, inviting finish. Tasted two times.

Quite smoky, but this is a rich wine that carries the oak rather well, and there’s a very solid tannic base to this that doesn’t dominate the taste. Delicious fruit under it all. Try in 2019.

The Clos Marsalette 2014 is a blend of 60% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc that was picked between 29 September and 10 October at 43 hectoliters per hectare and with a 21-day cuvaison. Aged in 40% new oak, it has a rounded and quite sensual bouquet with mulberry and thyme scents emerging from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, the oak a little conspicuous at the moment. There are no hard edges here.
