Bodegas Tradición Sherries
From Sherry Notes:
Bodegas Tradición is one of the newer bodegas in Jerez, but one with a great reputation and an impressive collection of wines that are older than the company itself. It was started in 1998 when Joaquín Rivero, a former president of one of the biggest real estate companies in Europe, acquired old soleras from defunct bodegas and restored a 19th-century bodega to bring them together.
The company relates to one of the oldest bodegas in the sherry region, Bodega CZ – J.M. Rivero, which dates back to the 1650’s and which was run by the ancestors of Sr. Rivero. To honour the original bodega, since 2015 the official full name is now Bodegas Tradición CZ.
At the core of the current Oloroso and Palo Cortado soleras are 18th century wines bought from the almacenista Agustín Blazquez (owned by Domecq). Other wines, mostly from 19th century soleras, were bought from Bodegas Croft (especially vintage butts passed on from Alfred Gilbey), Bodegas Delgado Zuleta (especially for the Amontillado solera), Osborne, Paternina, Sandeman, Harveys (for P.X.) and Bobadilla.
Fino Tradición is a relatively new expression, released in 2013. Bottled en rama (unfiltered) around 12 years of age.
Oloroso V.O.R.S. is the old Oloroso from Bodegas Tradicion. As a VORS sherry it is guaranteed to be over 30 years old, in this case it is said to be closer to 45 years of age. It is highly respected and has been on the wine lists of famous restaurants like El Bulli and The Fat Duck.
Tradicion, being a fairly young bodega (started in 1998, with the first wines released in 2003), composed this wine from old stocks bought from defunct sherry houses. At its base is a 18th Century solera with 7 criaderas, started by Agustin Blazquez and later taken over by Bodegas Domecq, as well as a 19th Century solera started by Alfred Gilbey. At this moment the solera is only replenished with external wines that are already 15 years or older, to keep it at a high average age.
Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe NV Tradicion Pedro Ximenez 20 años VOS, produced from Pedro Ximenez grapes and aged in a solera for an average of 23-25 years (which was originally purchased from Domecq & Harveys), is bottled ‘young’ to preserve the character of the grapes and make it more drinkable. The alcohol is also kept at the allowed minimum of 15%. It lacks the rancio notes of others, and is looking for the balance between age and fruit, raisins, dates, dried plums, cappuccino coffee, and licorice while following the clean and precise profile of all the wines they produce. The palate is equally balanced and elegant.
